Law and Policy

The Ohio Commission on Fatherhood makes law and policy recommendations to the Ohio state legislature, state agencies and the federal government to promote responsible fatherhood. The Commission believes that government should make it easier for fathers to be involved in their children's lives. One of four core objectives of the Commission is to develop father-friendly law and policy.

Current Ohio legislation, federal legislation and policies regarding families often focuses on mothers and children while overlooking fathers. The Commission seeks to make public policy more inclusive by promoting responsible fatherhood whenever families are impacted with the ultimate goal of enhancing the well-being of Ohio’s children. We believe that if more fathers are actively and positively involved in their children’s lives, families will be strengthened. We are working with law and policymakers to enact legislation that encourages father involvement.

The staff of the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood meets with legislators to brief them on the work of the Commission as well as pending legislation that impacts fathers and families. Policymakers need to be informed about the importance of involved and committed fathers because the most challenging social problems of our time are related to father absence.
